Engineered Quartz vs Granite for the Kitchen Worktop

Engineered quartz has become a compelling alternative to the classic granite worktop because it combines very low porosity, a consistent appearance and high resistance to stains from coffee, wine and oil. Unlike many natural stones, its surface does not need to be sealed to prevent liquids from penetrating. One important detail remains: this material is manufactured from mineral particles bonded with resins and pigments.

Why does quartz stain less easily than many natural stones?

The decisive factor is porosity. Engineered quartz has an almost non-porous surface, making it harder for liquids that commonly cause concern on a kitchen worktop to be absorbed. Spills can therefore be wiped away quickly, and the sealing used on certain natural stones to improve stain resistance is unnecessary.

  • It has extremely low porosity.
  • No waterproofing sealant is required after installation.
  • It withstands everyday splashes from food and drinks well.
  • It can usually be cleaned with water, a soft cloth and mild detergent.
  • Its patterns and colours are more uniform than those of many natural slabs.

Does granite really need to be sealed regularly?

Not in every case. Comparisons between granite and quartz often oversimplify this issue. According to the Natural Stone Institute, many granite worktops do not need a sealant at all, whereas others benefit from the application of a suitable product. If sealing is required and carried out properly, some sealants can have an expected service life of up to 10 or 15 years.

The advantage of quartz is therefore not necessarily that it eliminates annual maintenance that every granite surface would otherwise need. Rather, it removes the need to assess this requirement and apply sealant from the outset. With natural stone, the porosity, finish and specific type of slab determine whether additional protection is needed; even when sealed, the material becomes more stain-resistant but not completely stain-proof.

Are quartz joints genuinely easier to conceal?

A consistent colour and pattern can make it easier for the installer to create a visually unobtrusive joint, especially with uniform designs. However, it is incorrect to claim that the material “does not need resin”: the individual sections are joined using special adhesives, usually tinted to match the slab. The joints still exist, and how visible they are depends on the cuts, the worktop design and the skill of the stone fabricator.

  • The sections are fitted to minimise the gap between joints.
  • A colour-matched adhesive is applied at the seam.
  • The parts are aligned and kept level while the adhesive cures.
  • Strongly pronounced veining requires more planning to maintain visual continuity.

Quartz and granite offer different everyday advantages

Its low absorption makes engineered quartz advantageous when dealing with liquids and simplifies maintenance, but granite has an important benefit near the cooker: it copes better with high temperatures. Quartz contains polymer resins that can discolour or develop permanent marks when very hot pots and pans are placed directly on it, which is why manufacturers recommend using heat trivets.

Granite also provides the natural variation in pattern that many interior designs seek, while quartz allows greater control over shade and pattern repetition. In both materials, heavy impacts on edges can cause chips, and cut-outs for the sink and hob must be made correctly to reduce stress points in the kitchen worktop.

How much does it cost to replace granite with quartz in the kitchen?

Price may be precisely the factor that keeps granite competitive. A Brazilian reference published in 2026 estimates installed worktops in common domestic granite varieties at approximately R$ 550 to R$ 900 per m², although special varieties can exceed R$ 1,500 per m². Another market reference puts quartz worktops at around R$ 1,300 per m², with substantial variation depending on brand, colour, thickness, cut-outs, edge finishing and installation. These figures are only intended as a general indication: the quotation from the local stone fabricator determines the actual cost.

Engineered quartz is a better fit for those who prioritise stain resistance, a controlled appearance and straightforward maintenance, whereas granite remains appealing because of the price of many domestic varieties, its heat resistance and the natural pattern of every slab. The decision is not simply about replacing one “old” stone with another that is “better”: it means deciding which properties matter most for the renovation and comparing the cost of the complete worktop, including material, cut-outs, joints, sink, upstand, transport and installation.
